What is Construction Project Management? In general, it is described as the process by which large-scale commercial and industrial construction projects are carried out. In the Canada , this process is commonly referred to as CPM or Construction Project Management. It involves a number of processes including project planning, scheduling, estimating, controlling, and finishing. The basic function of all these projects is to provide a safe, smooth, and reliable infrastructure that will last for years to come.

What is Construction Project Management Responsibilities? The main responsibility of a Construction Project Manager is to coordinate and manage the various phases involved in any construction project. The various projects may include building construction, road, and bridge construction, and environmental remediation. A Construction Project Manager is typically involved in each of these projects and supervises the progress of each project. To be a Construction Project Manager you will need to have a high school diploma or an equivalent certificate, along with at least 3 years of experience managing construction-related projects.

What are some typical projects covered under the construction project management? Bridge and road construction projects require that a Construction Project Manager is involved in decision making and coordinating various aspects of the project. This includes scheduling a project's major contractors, determining the scope of work, approving documents, negotiating contracts, communicating with subcontractors and others, negotiating with the appropriate government agencies and checking permits. Other projects that commonly require the services of a Construction Project Manager include preparing bids and proposals, finalizing financial estimates, preparing bid documents and final documents, and communicating with all necessary parties involved in the construction project.

What is the typical staff composition for a Construction Project Management career? In most construction project management jobs, a Construction Project Manager will either hold a title of Construction Project Manager or Construction Project Management Specialist (PMMS). There are some who prefer to hold a combination of these titles to ensure a comprehensive understanding of the entire project and the ability to anticipate problems and manage them efficiently and effectively.

What is the educational requirement for a Construction Project Management career? Most state colleges and universities require at least a bachelor's degree in project management, along with a year of experience managing projects. Project management experience is required as well. The amount of experience required will depend upon the type of construction project you are managing and the expertise of the individual hiring for the position. The most highly skilled project managers will be able to quickly adjust to a new job and learn the ropes quickly. At the same time, there will be some project managers who will not be able to adjust to a new job very quickly.

Do I need certification for a construction project management career? Typically, a Construction Project Management Professional (CPTM) certification is required to gain employment with a major construction company. For project managers who have been employed and then re-trained, a CPTM will be acceptable. However, for those fresh out of training programs or individuals without any experience in this field, certification would not be necessary. There are a number of national and international accrediting bodies that offer a CPTM certification.

Can I work as an independent contractor or a part of a larger team/team of project managers? Working alone as a project manager does come with certain advantages. You will not be required to report to a supervisor and there is usually no dress code. You may only need access to a computer if it is part of your job description and your employer allows it. Project management career paths often cross over into administrative positions such as accountants, quality control monitors, and managers in various offices across an office complex.

Are there benefits to working as a project manager? The most important benefit is that it allows you to stay on top of multiple different aspects of a large project simultaneously. It gives you the ability to make quick, effective decisions under time constraints and to delegate responsibilities and duties to other members of your staff or to the appropriate departments. A project management career path can take you all over the world as you work and complete projects, depending on your chosen field of expertise.
